Yeahhhhh, they are annoying af but I bet them being there is cause for plucky comic relief and most likely in the original anime.

Probably late to say it now, but this series really has issues with managing tone consistency. Doesn’t feel like much a genuine sense of tension imho.

Hm how unexpected. guns, and early steam boats. was not expecting tech of really any kind.

if i remember right... the different areas each dragon race or their descendants controlled had different ideas on technology. some groups let secrets out about metallurgy, chemistry, and more... other groups kept their humans primitive and stupid and feudal/serf/thrall on the land just to farm and such. the sorcerers like Orphen and the other Fang School and the Continental Sorcery Society members believe in CONTROLLED progress and advancement. with THEM at the reins/behind the wheel etc. as to the Empire and its' Holy Pope and Church etc. :> heh. we saw what THEY were REALLY like last season. :D

that's the reason why Majic's hometown looks and operates like a middle-ages Earth town... and other places have paddle-wheel steam ships, photography, electric lights, and other 1900's level of tech

They were also in the original: despite the massively changed story, that stayed - Azalea left pregnant with (not from) a reborn Childman on a steamboat at the end of the first season.

Now that you mentioned it I do remember some thing like that. It's been a long time though, so my memory is a little foggy on the matter.
